This Conservatory branch aims to close the gap in musical knowledge between the students at Givat Ram and those in East Jerusalem, with the long term aim of establishing a connection between East and West Jerusalem by means of music education on an equal footing. Our hope is that eventually the East Jerusalem Conservatory pupils will attain the Ministry of Education matriculation in music, like their counterparts at Givat Ram.
The main objectives in pursuit of this goal are making professional music lessons accessible to the various populations in East Jerusalem, especially the Arab population. We believe that every musically talented child living in East Jerusalem, irrespective of ethnic, religious or socioeconomic background, deserves an opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Tuition for all is set at a subsidized rate, and scholarships are granted to those who cannot afford to pay this amount. These scholarships are funded by the Jerusalem Municipality.
- Opened in April 2019, currently with 94 students
- Situated in Sheikh Jarrah
- Lessons provided in eastern and western instruments, including piano, strings, wind instruments, oud, Oriental (Arab) violin and percussion
- Instruction in Oriental voice
- Instruction in music theory
- Music instruction in small groups for pre-schoolers (age 2-5 years)
- Choir
- Ensembles and Orchestras, including an Oriental Ensemble.
To ensure the highest level of instruction, the teaching staff at the East Jerusalem Conservatory is hand-picked by the branch director, Nizar Elkhatar, and the Director of the Conservatory in Givat Ram, Barak Yeivin. Some of the teachers work in both institutions.
Pupils and parents from the East Jerusalem branch are included in the weekly concerts held at Givat Ram for all Conservatory students and their parents. Our vision is that music education and cultivation of a culture of excellence, in both branches of the Conservatory, and the exposure of Jewish and Arab pupils to each other will foster a gradual and natural process of bridging the gap between the two cultures.
For the first time ever, at the initiative of the Conservatory directors, children from East Jerusalem schools are attending concerts given by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra at the Jerusalem Theater (400 children each at 2 concerts). Also at the initiative of the Conservatory directors, a pilot program of musical enrichment will be implemented in 9 East Jerusalem kindergartens, including a concert in the kindergarten at the end of the year. These activities represent an effort to generate interest in the Conservatory by exposing as many children as possible to the world of music.
